Li Huanwu, Hunky Grandson of Singapore's Found Father, Marries Boyfriend Heng Yirui in South Africa

Li Huanwu, the grandson of Singapore’s founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, married his partner, Heng Yirui in South Africa on Friday, 24 May.

This is remarkable because Singapore still criminalizes gay sex in the much-contested “Section 377A” of their penal code. Criminalization even survived a recent audit of the penal code that was meant to modernize it.

The 33 year-old hunk was one of the attendees of Singapore’s largest pride event, Pink Dot 2018. He publicly came out of the closet that July and was photographed at the event with then-boyfriend Heng (seen above). He and his partner were also featured in Out in Singapore, which aims to foster acceptance and support for “LGBTQ persons who wish to come out to family, friends and peers in the community.”

Even so, sentiment in the city-state is divided. Even Huanwu’s own uncle, serving Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, is against reversing the law. Hopefully that will change one day as the slow moral arc of the universe gets closer to justice.
